A five-star hotel in the diplomatic quarter of Riyadh for "Saudi Hotel and Resorts Company", the "Diplomatic Quarter Hotel" is a low-rise four-story building inspired by the country’s taupe desert landscape. The Dubai branch of Perkins + Will, a U.S.-based architecture firm, which conceived the 40,000 m2 project design were inspired by a variety of local influences, including the natural environment and Saudi culture. The lighting design adopted by Lumiere Studio, in collaboration with HILIGHTS, enhances the organic shapes of the building with soft lighting choices. The center of the hotel is designed as an oases-like sanctuary, while the exterior is made up of layered strata reflecting the geology of the country. The façade is already layered with internal spaces that filter in natural sunlight, so the lighting is appropriately subtle and hidden. Recessed lighting fixtures serve a double function of illuminating the terrace while following the natural shapes of the architecture. This project illustrates Lumiere Studio’s dedication to first understanding the architect’s vision before laying out a lighting design to complement it.
